The handshake has its roots in 5th century BC Greece. Assassinations and murders were abound. While the rulers at the time requested metal detectors, the technology was a little behind. The solution at the time was many soldiers would clasp arms to check for concealed daggers to protect against assassination attempts. In a roundabout way, the handshake was a greeting of peace.
